Why have your knives sharpened:
  • The knife works when you need it.  Particularly knives used by emergency
personnel... time matters.  A properly sharpened knife will reduce time, and
avoid multiple cuts to get the job done.
  • More productive.  Your work will go faster and easier.
  • Less waste.  Ever cut something with a dull knife, and find yourself throwing
away a lot of torn, broken parts?  With a sharp knife, this is reduced.  This
applies to food, dressing game, cutting supplies, etc.
  • Reduced injuries.  There are two parts to this.  First, repetitive injury can be
reduced because a sharp knife needs less pressure to work with.  Second, a
sharp knife properly used is safer because it requires less force, so you
maintain better control of the knife.
  • Many people cut themselves when a knife is sharpened.  This is not because a
sharp knife is more dangerous... it's because techniques were used that were
developed while, or to compensate for, using a dull knife.  In other words...

Other Sharpening Services
1SharpKnife
All knives given the same process.  Many
sharpeners develop a method or technique and
apply it to every knife, regardless of size, style,
or intended use.  All knives are sharpened at
the same angle.  A single piece of equipment
may be used that sharpens every knife the
same.  If a multi-step process is used, the
knives may be sharpened "in batch"  (all are
sharpened at step one, then moved to step two,
etc.), and/or given the same treatment.
Each knife uniquely sharpened.  Each
knife is evaluated and given a bevel and level of
finish specific to the knife.  A variety of
equipment is available for obtaining the best
edge that best suits the knife and its intended
purpose.  Also, each knife is sharpened one at
a time, from start to finish.
A "pull through" type sharpener is used, that
often has a couple of rotating wheels, that does
nothing more than "re-edge" the knife, giving it
the same angle, edge and level of finish,
without taking into account the blade's
geometry.  Repairs are limited or impossible.
Knives are sharpened, and not just
"re-edged":
 Bevels are re-established, and
equipment is available to repair broken tips,
remove bolster, lower bevel angles and/or
restore blade shape if needed.
Training / Experience:  the "sharpener"
receives little or no training in how to sharpen,
and knows nothing about what makes a sharp
edge.  Training may be limited to little more
than how to operate a machine.
Training / Experience:  many hours devoted to
learning how to sharpen, and studying what it
takes to make a knife sharp. 5 years providing
a knife sharpening service.
Equipment:  usually 1 or 2 pieces that do little
more than re-edge the knife.  Equipment may
not be suited for sharpening, for example a
"pull-thru" sharpener, or a high speed belt
sander with wood sanding belts.  Knife
sharpening is often an "add-on" to another
business.
Equipment:  1SharpKnife uses a variety of
equipment to repair and sharpen your knives,
and the equipment is intended for this purpose.
This includes:  water cooled stones, variable
speed belt sharpeners with specialized belts,
and hand sharpening.  No more metal than
necessary is removed.
Final edge not tested:  The knife is given "the
usual" sharpening method and returned
without any check to see if the knife is sharp.
Final edge inspected and tested:  The edge is
examined under magnification, a test slice thru
paper or other medium is performed and the
edge is checked with a "Razor Edge - Edge
Tester".
Not all knife sharpeners are the same.  Here are some key differences between
